The LAS Team had the pleasure of meeting up with representatives from FeRN-Lincs recently as they came to the Lincolnshire Showground to donate the prestigious People's Choice Award for presentation to the winning school at the Lincolnshire Show Schools' Challenge competition.
FeRN-Lincs has education as one of its fundamental objectives, and have been supporting the Lincolnshire Agricultural Society (LAS) for many years, with their educational projects.
Former FeRN-Lincs Chair Ruth Wilkinson said: "We are delighted to be able to show continued support for the Schools' Challenge by donating the trophy for the People's Choice category. Our members, some who have mentored schools that have competed in the Schools' Challenge, are inspired to see just how the schools have learnt about food and agriculture in the process of completing their challenge. We continue to be impressed by the imaginative approach the students show in their projects, and we are delighted to see the challenge gaining more interest from Lincolnshire schools each year."
The Schools' Challenge projects are completed throughout the school year, culminating in the schools journeying to the Lincolnshire Showground to reveal all their hard work. The judging process takes place on the days of the Lincolnshire Show, with the schools on site.
Last year, a new category was introduced, giving the general public the opportunity to have their say and engage with the schools taking part. At the end of the two Show days, votes are counted, and a winner is announced following the close of the Show - with the winning school being presented with the trophy in school by the Education Team.

Lovely to see local organisations like FeRN-Lincs supporting the Schools' Challenge – it's so important that kids get hands-on experience with where their food actually comes from. The People's Choice Award is a great addition too, especially since it lets the public get involved in the judging process. Speaking of keeping things running smoothly behind the scenes, I've been using a scroll test online lately to check my mouse wheel after it started acting jumpy while scrolling through all the event photos from the Showground. Anyway, really heartwarming to see the mentorship angle with former members helping out the schools – that's the kind of community spirit that makes Lincolnshire great.
