A day in the life of Rhubarb Theatre 30 Mar

Contributed by Rhubarb Theatre

5.45am: the alarm goes off. I fumble around quietly to turn it off and then try to find my Rhubarb Theatre t-shirt in the pitch black room (while trying not to wake my husband!) An hour later, after forcing down breakfast and persuading the dog that she doesn't want to play at this time of the morning, the rest of the team turns up and we're off!

We arrive at the school and are let in by a sleepy caretaker. We're half an hour into set-up before we are informed that gymnastics is taking place in the hall first thing, so we frantically clear our set and lights to one side of the hall so they can lay down their mats. As a small team of three, this is no cushty acting job - after lugging around a heavy set, lighting rigs and speakers we finish our set-up, do our tech checks and at 9.15am the children are ready to come in.

One hour of performing might not seem like much, but it's a physical workout, including dance, mask work and much more. We get a great response from all and the schools love it! We have a few minutes for Q&A at the end of the performance, then it's time to pack away - racing against time to be out before the dinner ladies arrive!

Then, it's time for a quick pop-in to another school to market the show, and back to the office where I'm prepping for a storytelling session, answering emails, making props, setting up projects, marketing, funding and much more. It's different every day and I love this life.

Interactive storytelling with Rhubarb Theatre will take place all day at Countryside Lincs in the Tennyson Pavilion
