Quotes From HRH and Society Officers
Quotes from the public speech by HRH The Princess Royal:
“Congratulations to all involved in creating this new building.
“The history of this county has been important in defining what we mean by sustainability, and it is set to play a great role in explaining what sustainability means for the future.
“This is a truly original building, one for everyone here in Lincolnshire and I hope that all of you will use it as much as possible. “
Quotes from the radio interview by HRH The Princess Royal:
On the subject of the EPIC Centre being developed since her last visit in 2004:
“It does not seem all that long ago since my last visit and to see what has been achieved in that space of time is very praiseworthy.
“It is sometimes difficult to agree on something that is different, as this building is, and technology and sustainability in building does not always sit very well together, so the EPIC Centre is a very important landmark and set to play an important role in future. For the Showground, it’s absolutely fantastic.”
On the subject of how the EPIC Centre developed from an initial idea by the Society Chaplain to develop a centre for the community on a foundation of sustainability.
“To follow through this original idea is wonderful. His original concern was in the way that rural communities are perceived and that is very important. There is a sense that when you say ‘agriculture’ people see a ploughed field, but that does not include the idea of making appropriate use of the land. “
On the importance of sustainability.
“Hopefully in this country we do now begin to understand what sustainability means, not just in terms of the impact immediately but learning what must be done for the future.”
On the strength of the Lincolnshire agricultural show, compared with those in other areas which appear to be less strong now.
“I asked about the livestock classes and they are very full. This demonstrates that the farming community view this as an important event.”
On trying Lincolnshire sausages
“They were pretty good – of course I keep pigs and make sausages. I have Gloucester Old Spots.”
Quotes from John Lockwood, chairman of the Agricultural Society:
“The EPIC building is not just a 30,000 square foot conference and exhibition centre, it is an eco building with few rivals. A grass sedum roof, helical wind turbines, bio fuel boilers and low carbon construction methods make this building what it is. And the results are significant; events hosted here offset their carbon footprint by up to 60%. Within weeks of being open for use, the Centre was p raised as on of the top 20 inspirational eco buildings in the UK
“Whatever your views on climate change, we owe it to future generations to be less wasteful that we have been with the earth’s finite resources.
“The EPIC building will serve to host numerous technologies that will harness the earth’s more plentiful resources – the sun, the wind, the rain, and will educate and inform the public of the availability and use of such technologies.
“Here at EPIC we will teach the technicians to install and run these technologies in our homes, in our places of work and in our public buildings.”
Quotes from Lord Yarborough, president of the Agricultural Society:
“Over the years, the show has broadened from a purely agricultural show to the Lincolnshire Show of today. It now celebrates so many aspects of life in this great county, but I am pleased it has never lost sight of its agricultural heritage.
“Today represents another chapter in its history. The time had come for change and it is very exciting to see the society respond with such great confidence in the future by taking this bold step and building this wonderful new centre.
“We are delighted to welcome back her Royal Highness, the Princess Royal, who in 1988 was president of the Society and who has shown continued interest by visiting the show in1999 and 2004.”
